These words, written on a banner across the top of an Interactive White Board, welcome students to the St. Mary’s Prep Silver Math classroom every day. So many of our students tell us that they find math class is one of their favorite parts of the school day!
“Silver Math” is a program for St. Mary’s students in the 5th through 8th grade who display a special talent for success in advanced mathematics. The rigorous curriculum is presented in a nurturing and supportive classroom environment, and is designed to prepare our students for success at the high school level. Upon graduation, many of our Silver Math students successfully demonstrate proficiency in Algebra I and are placed in advanced programs in the high school of their choice.
The Silver Math curriculum is based on a detailed outline of sequenced topics developed a few miles northwest of our school, at Pope John XXIII High School in Sparta, New Jersey, for use in the Sussex County Academy of Catholic Schools. We’ve adopted their program successfully here in Morris County. The curriculum is further strengthened through the use of “best practices” as defined by the ACE (Alliance for Catholic Education) program developed by the faculty at the University of Notre Dame. The combination of a proven curriculum and “best practices” provides our students with the opportunity to acquire a strong foundation in mathematics for success in high school and beyond, and to enjoy the adventure of learning along the way!
We are proud of the accomplishments of our Silver Math students, both past and present! At St. Mary’s Prep, we recognize the world of mathematics as one important part of our Heavenly Father’s marvelous creation, and we thoroughly enjoy the exploration of his fabulous mysteries!
