The 8th Grade Bronze Math students have been learning about ratios, rates, and percentages. They completed a lab that involved tax, tips, and sales that applied the knowledge they learned about percentages. Students rotated through three centers. The first center “Chez Mathematiques” simulated a restaurant where students chose menu items, applied their knowledge of percentages for the tip, and calculated the cost of the bill. The second center, “Was 7x3, Is 10+11, Always Will be 30-9” simulated a clothing store where students had to calculate prices for items including their tax and sale prices. The third center, “Math Donald’s” simulated a fast food restaurant where students chose menu items, calculate taxes, and find the total cost of the bill. These three centers challenged students to apply their knowledge of percentages to real life situations and scenarios.
