Soaring in Science
What a great month we had in Science!!! The students in
grade 4 did a fantastic job building their ecosystems and presenting their
work. Not only did they learn about the different types of ecosystems but
how organisms and plants interact with each other. They learned that there
is an organization to the various communities that make up the particular
habitat and patterns of interdependency in the ecological systems.
Grade 5 students are looking forward to the class field trip to the
Liberty Science Center on April 14th. In the meantime, they have been
focusing on changes in the ecosystems and how adaptations and competition
among species can determine their survival. They also learned that a
successful method to explore the natural world is to observe, record, and
then analyze and communicate the results.
Grade 6 students became experts in the history of science…From Mendeleev
publishing the first periodic table to Marie Curie discovering two
elements (polonium and radium). They enjoyed making a cartoon on “Ionic
Bonding” to add to the daily lessons on how ions form.
Grade 7 students enjoyed being “teacher for the day.” Students learned
more about the solar system and recognized how scientists such as
Copernicus, Galileo, and Kepler contributed to the acceptance of the
geocentric and heliocentric systems (ways the planets and stars are
thought to revolve around a stationary Earth).
Grade 8 students had an opportunity to dive into the body organization
focusing on the skeletal system, muscular system, and the skin.
Identifying the various parts and functions kept them in awe of just how
amazing the human body is.
