The 5th graders are participating in the L.E.A.D. program (formerly known as D.A.R.E.) through the Denville Police Department. Officer Bill Underwood is almost done presenting his lessons about many topics including decision making, respecting others, the effects of tobacco, alcohol, and marijuana, and taking good care of our bodies. The students are now in the process of writing group skits for the L.E.A.D. graduation which will be held later in the year. The students will also write individual essays as a requirement of graduation from the program. This program has been a worthwhile experience that will impact the students’ lives as they grow older.
Reading: The children have learned various strategies in developing their ability to read. The children are now reading books and are feeling very excited about being able to read independently!
Math: The children have learned about graphing through taking information and creating a bar graph, pictograph, picture graph, and tally charts. The children worked together in small groups to make the different charts and graphs.The children are now learning addition through the use of hands on material and are very excited to be able to do addition.
Learning Centers: This is a time during the day that the students work together independently using hands on activities which are based on the skills being taught in class.
S.T.E.M. Projects- The students have completed various S.T.E.M. projects and are becoming quite the Engineers!
Engineering Week- This was an exciting week! We did a S.T.E.M. project and we had parents come into our classroom who are engineers to talk to us!
Read Across America- Students from Morris Knolls High School visited our classroom and read some great story books to us. It was a lot of fun!
The students in Mrs. Butler's TK class designed Evergreen Trees for winter habitats for birds. They used ice cream cones, made green frosting by mixing yellow and blue food coloring and sprinkled snow with confectionery sugar on the trees!! These early engineers enjoyed the edible treats!!! Yummy!
The TK class have been learning about the Presidents throughout February. They particularly enjoyed making Lincoln Penny Pendants and learning about money!!
The TK students made crosses and are learning about Lent! Lent is a time for acts of Love. Each day one students picks a kind deed for the class to follow for that day.
